When most people think of the Emerald Coast, they picture sugar-white beaches and emerald Gulf waters—but just a short drive inland, another kind of Florida adventure awaits. Hidden among towering cypress trees and scenic backroads are some of the most beautiful natural springs in the state.

Perfect for a day trip from Destin or Miramar Beach, these crystal-clear springs offer refreshing water, family-friendly swimming areas, kayaking adventures, and even world-class scuba diving. If you’re looking to trade saltwater for freshwater for a day, here are a few incredible springs worth exploring during your stay.

1. Ponce de Leon Springs State Park

(Approx. 45–50 minutes from Destin)

One of the most family-friendly springs in the area, Ponce de Leon Springs State Park is a hidden gem managed by Florida State Parks. The spring features a shallow, sandy-bottom swimming area filled with stunning blue-green water that stays a refreshing 68 degrees year-round.

Fed by two natural spring vents, the spring pumps out nearly 500,000 gallons of crystal-clear water daily. Families love the easy-entry steps, calm swimming conditions, and peaceful nature trail that winds through the surrounding landscape.

The park also offers picnic tables, restrooms, and shaded areas—making it a perfect spot for a relaxing afternoon outdoors.

2. Morrison Springs County Park

(Approx. 45–50 minutes from Destin)

Morrison Springs County Park is one of the most popular freshwater springs in Northwest Florida—and for good reason. This beautiful 161-acre park features a massive spring pool surrounded by towering cypress trees and a scenic wooden boardwalk.

The spring is especially popular among scuba divers thanks to its underwater caverns and crystal-clear visibility, but it’s also a great place for swimming, photography, and nature lovers.

Best of all? Entry is generally free since the park is managed by Walton County. Just keep in mind that weekends can get busy, especially during the warmer months.

3. Vortex Spring Adventures

(Approx. 50 minutes from Destin)

For visitors looking for a little more adventure, Vortex Spring Adventures delivers a fun-filled experience unlike any other nearby spring. This privately owned resort is famous for its 50-foot-deep spring and extensive underwater cave system, making it a bucket-list destination for scuba divers.

Even if you’re not diving, there’s still plenty to enjoy. Visitors can swim in the cool spring water, relax in the open recreation areas, and enjoy fun extras like the rope swing. The property also features a dive shop and campground, making it a great choice for adventurous travelers.

Because it’s privately owned, there is a small admission fee—but many visitors say the experience is well worth it.

4. Cypress Springs

(Approx. 1 hour from Destin)

If you’ve ever seen photos of unbelievably turquoise Florida spring water online, there’s a good chance it was Cypress Springs. Known for its vibrant blue water and untouched natural beauty, this spring feels like stepping into a tropical paradise.

Unlike some other springs, Cypress Springs is most commonly accessed by kayak or canoe through Holmes Creek. Many visitors launch through Holmes Creek Canoe Livery and enjoy a scenic paddle through peaceful Florida wilderness before arriving at the spring.

The journey itself becomes part of the adventure, offering incredible wildlife views, calm waters, and a true Old Florida experience.

Laura Co-Owner
Hi, I’m Laura Clayton — co-owner of Beach Condos in Destin, Realtor with World Impact Real Estate, full-time vacation rental nerd, and full-time mom-on-the-go. When I’m not helping guests find the perfect beachfront condo in Destin or Miramar Beach, I’m usually taking care of my two dogs, Lily (my terrier mix) and Ziggy (my standard Goldendoodle), or sitting at what feels like my 1,000th sporting event cheering on my kids, Reece and Liam. If you’ve ever tried answering emails from the bleachers, you’ll understand my life perfectly. I’ve spent nearly two decades in the vacation rental world, helping thousands of families make memories along the Emerald Coast — from first-time beach trips to traditions that bring guests back year after year. I love creating welcoming, pet-friendly spaces, coming up with slightly ridiculous beachy condo names, and making sure our homes feel comfortable, clean, and genuinely cared for. As a Realtor with World Impact Real Estate, I also help buyers and owners navigate the real estate side of beach living — whether that means purchasing an investment property, selling a condo, or maximizing rental potential while still keeping a place that feels like home. At the end of the day, I’m just someone who loves the beach, loves people, and believes vacations should feel easy, personal, and a little bit special. If you’re planning a stay — or thinking about owning a piece of the beach yourself — I’d love to help. Let’s get your flip-flops in the sand and make it a great one 🌊👣
